Abstract

This study investigates how TikTok’s core design elements contribute to addictive usage patterns among Australian teenagers. Using a mixed-method approach, the quantitative data were collected through an online survey of 50 participants aged 13–18. The questions measured usage frequency, app features, engagement, and challenges with limiting screen time. In addition, ten participants completed interviews exploring their personal experiences with the app. Results indicate that TikTok’s personalized algorithm, notification systems, and autoplay features significantly contribute to continued usage and difficulties with self-regulation among teenagers. These findings highlight the urgency for improved social media management strategies and app-design adjustments that may reduce the risk of digital addiction.
