Abstract

The rapid growth of urbanization and the increasing deployment of Internet of Things (IoT) devices have transformed traditional cities into smart cities. Smart city applications generate enormous amounts of data from sensors, cameras, connected vehicles, healthcare systems, energy grids, and intelligent transportation systems. Traditional cloud computing architectures face challenges such as high latency, bandwidth limitations, security concerns, and scalability issues. Edge Intelligence (EI) integrates Artificial Intelligence (AI) with edge computing to process data closer to the data source, enabling real-time decision-making and efficient resource utilization. This review paper presents a comprehensive study of Edge Intelligence architecture for smart city applications. The paper discusses the architecture, components, enabling technologies, applications, benefits, challenges, and future research directions of EI in smart cities.
